Rainmakers and Branding
Rain- seems like that’s what we got for almost the entire summer! At what point did New York and Seattle trade places and I had no clue?
Being that rain was the lead topic of discussion for most of us of us in this part of the States at the beginning of the summer, it does bring to mind a lesson on Branding I picked up from one Dr. Ben Mack which occurred last year.
In this and subsequent articles I am going to attempt to cover the major partsof the talkwhich included: 1) Making lightning Strike, 2) Keeping the Lightning Striking and 3) Bottling your lightning.
Those not familiar who Ben Mack is should know that he ranks among the top dogson Branding today in the country bar none! Mr. Mack (or should I say Dr. Mack) has worked at some of the most recognized advertizing agencies during his memorable professional undertakings. How does Vice President for Brand Strategy at one of the major corporations sound to you?
Basically, what that means was he was in charge of a ” billion dollar budget (yes, I said ” billion or 500 million smakers)! Do you think he knows what he is talking about? I most certainly do, and not only has he worked magic for the many businesses he has worked for, he is also a professional magician who at the age of 19 was the youngest recipient of the Award of Merit given by the magic castle.
Do you know what a Rainmaker is? Do you want to become one? A rainmaker aside from the apparent implication of a indian shaman who using magic makes it rain, is a person with the extraordinary talent to be a magnet for clients, exploit (in a good way) political associations, and bottom line, make the corporation a great deal of money. However, when it rains the lightning isnt far behind! We will get more into that in a bit.
The essential obligation as a marketer is to “up sell” folks understanding of reality. In Benjamin Macks book entitled “Think Two Products Ahead” he gets into the whole concept of how useful branding only occurs when businesses (large or small) think two products ahead instead of the current time frame and for these companies to put together thriving affiliations with their client or customers through their Brand. The section in the book where Ben Mack discusses the process of developing your Legend Platform is worth it’s weight in gold!
The “Brand” (called YOU) is formulated by using legends or tales that are told over and over and gain strenght with time. These stories should be allowed to say the opposite of what the others say and will increase as the stories get older. So, if you had to make a choice of the type of story you use to make your business shine like a diamond (you are reading articles like this to help you right?) why not let them be legends. A Legendary business is a profitable one!
Stay tuned for the next part in the series of articles covering Dr. Bens How to Become a Rainmaker.
