Are You Making This Huge List Building Mistake?
Just about everyone has heard the saying “the money is in the list”. Most people may even believe it, however, most new internet marketers will not heed the advice to start building a list. If they do they are likely to make a huge mistake and just put their opt in box in the sidebar of a blog.
If the only place you have your opt in box is in your sidebar you are making a huge mistake. When people come to a blog they are not usually in the mindset to opt in to something. They may not even register your little opt in box in the sidebar because they are so focused on your content or whatever else you have going on on your site. If you want to create subscribers from readers the best way to convert your traffic is to give them less choices, in fact, give them ONE choice when they hit your page, and that’s to sign up.
What is an opt in page?
An opt in page is a short page that has one possible action your readers can take, and that’s to sign up for your autoresponder. This page is also known as a squeeze page because you “squeeze” the information out of the reader. Your opt in page will be short and sweet. It will provide just enough information for the reader to get excited about what you are offering and opt in. That’s all the page is trying to do, convert readers to subscribers. Get the name and email address.
If you create an opt in page you will increase your opt in rate in a huge way. We mentioned how many options there are on a regular page and a person with too many choices generally makes no choice at all. Your opt in page only gives them one choice, sign up or click the back button. If you have an interesting incentive for them to sign up they will.
What do I need on my opt in page?
Being such a simple page the opt in page does not have many elements. The first must have element is a freebie to give to your subscribers. This is a free report or an ecourse you create or have created for you. This will be given to the subscriber in exchange for their email address and name. This does not have to be a huge ebook, but it does have to have some perceived value.
The second element on your squeeze page is your headline. This is where you grab their attention and make them want to keep reading. This is what lets them know if you what you have is a match to what they are looking for. Here’s an example of one of my well converting squeeze page headlines. “Learn from a Giant Squid How to Make Squidoo work for You” Learn step by step how to choose a topic, find great products to promote, set up a new squidoo lens and start making money!…” This is for a 10 day ecourse on how to use squidoo to make money. This site converts quite well because people come looking for how to do squidoo and that’s just what this page offers.
A quick list of benefits people will receive from opting in, what they will learn, how it will help them to know the information provided. You can do this in a bullet point list, which makes them very clear and accessible. Make sure you are talking about benefits, from the reader’s perspective, how is your information going to help them?
The final piece of the opt in page is the opt in box. This is the space where people actually enter their information. You get this part from your autoresponder service. You want to include the name of your freebie, and encourage them to fill in their name and BEST email address. After the code is created you can just copy it and then paste it right where you want it on your opt in page.
As you can see it really is a simple page, with one straight forward purpose. Once your opt in page is created and online you want to begin directing all your traffic to your opt in page first. If you are sending people to an affiliate product, send them to your list first. If you are selling your own product, get them on your list first. This way you can contact them more than once, and increase the likelihood of making a sale.
