A Guide To Asthma Relief

by James Redder

One of the most worrying global health trends in recent years is the number of asthma sufferers; it wasn’t that long ago that asthma only affected a small percentage of the population. Although it is treatable, asthma is still a chronic condition which affects the function of breathing of every person who is affected by it. This is a respiratory condition that when not treated properly can easily result in death, if the attack is not attended to in time or is severe.

Keeping a constant check on their condition is the most important step for an asthma sufferer. The specific medical treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the frequency of symptoms and specific treatments for it are broadly classified as:

*Preventative medications

*Relief medication for minor attacks

*Emergency treatment for serious attacks

For short term relief for all patients Bronchodilators are recommended but those with occasional mild attacks need no other medication; this form of medication is the one that many asthmatics will only ever need.

For sufferers with mild persistent attacks, low-dose glucocorticoids, leukotriene modifiers or a mastcell stabilizer are to be taken in addition to relievers. The use of oral glucocorticoids is reserved for patients with a serious asthma condition. Whatever the level of severity they experience all sufferers have a traditional reliever to aid them. It is also important that asthmatics learn what actually triggers an attack so they are able to stay clear of the triggers and possibly stop attacks completely. This particular respiratory problem has become to be recognized as a condition that is most associated with poor air quality and the reason why city dwellers are more likely to suffer.

Medications available over the counter and from the doctor can be very useful but should not be relied upon; if used on a regular basis they can cause serious side effects , including:

*Feelings of constant tiredness

*Feeling dizzy

*Impotence

*Feeling depressed

*Damage to the liver

Drugs of pharmaceutical quality are now being created to prompt the body’s own immune system to step up and take over but and increasing number of people are choosing to use natural medicines which are treating the origin of the respiratory condition instead. The task is to calm and soothe the hyperactive systems and strengthen the body weak systems; this is done by substances called catalysts. By using organic ingredients that have no side-effects with the same effect.

Some asthma sufferers have discovered the benefits of yoga as it helps to improve their breathing and overall health. Nutritional supplements and good diet will help improve the immune response and the overall health of the patients. Natural medication can also be used that will not leave harmful chemicals in the system; it is most important that the sufferer learns to control their asthma condition.

How to Get Sinus Relief

by Melody Mendalson

A lot of people know sinuses as those just affecting the nasal cavity. However, further reading will tell us that a sinus actually refer to a host of bones in the body. It’s just that paranasal sinuses are the most common that’s why we identified sinus and sinusitis with nasal discomforts. But now that that’s out of the way, let’s open the door to the discussion on the discomforts brought about by sinus infections and the ways these problems may encounter relief.

In order to find effective sinus relief, we have to identify what its symptoms are. These include nasal congestion, usually accompanied by a runny nose or a cough, some pain in the upper jaw, headache, swelling and pressure (normally described as a throbbing in the middle portion of the face) and, in certain cases, fatigue, weakness and even fever.

Pain in the sinuses is primarily caused by a blockage in the nasal cavity, mostly due to an inflammation. When our nasal passageways are hindered from working their usual functions, pressure builds up and pain ensues.

It usually succeeds a viral infection in our respiratory tract, but, more often than not, it is triggered by allergy-causing substances and other pollutants.

Sinusitis is not really deadly, if the proper medication and treatment follows it immediately. Therefore, whenever you feel the onset of a sinusitis attack, you don’t need to fear. There are many ways to relieve whatever ill conditions you’re feeling.

Sinus relief strategies

- Rest, rest, rest.

- You will be able to clear your nasal passages and improve circulation if you exercise during a sinusitis attack.

- Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Hot tea is your best bet against problem sinuses.

- Irrigate your nasal passageways whenever it strikes. Or, as a preventive measure, irrigate daily.

- Stay away from iced and cold drinks, because they will only aggravate the pain and worsen the clogging.

- Papaya enzymes taken around four times a day will help decrease the inflammation and swelling of your sinuses.

- Use a humidifier, particularly one that’s bacteria-free. Getting moisture, especially at night when you sleep, will help clear your clogged sinuses and relieve the pain and wooziness. If a humidifier is not available, inhale steam from a bowl around two to four times a day.

- Steer clear of potential allergens, like pollen, dust, pollutants, etc. They will only make the problem worse and, possibly, lead to asthma.

- If home remedies fail, try taking expectorants to help expel the mucus that has been building up in your nose. Of course, seek the advice of your physician before you take any kind of medicine, just to be one the safe side. Some medications and drugs have been found to aggravate infections in certain people who are allergic to them.

There is available relief for sinus problems. In fact, you don’t really have to resort to taking medication if the discomforts are still at manageable levels. Better yet, be proactive and avoid developing a sinus attack altogether. Keep away from possible triggers and keep a clean and healthy lifestyle. Of course, make sure you get enough humidity and avoid dry air.

Asthma problems? Your vacuum might be doing more hurt than good

by Kristina Brown

Achoo! Could you please pass me a tissue? Does this situation happen to you when you are vacuuming your home? Have you noticed that your allergies get particularly bad when you are vacuuming and your vacuum looks dusty, as if it spewed dirt all over itself? Insufficient filtering of expelled air is probably the cause of this predicament. To have a vacuum completely seal in dirt and particles you must have a true Sealed HEPA filtration system. If your vacuum is not a sealed system your vacuum might be doing more harm than good to the air in your house.

Why is my vacuum cleaner insufficiently filtering, if it contains a filter? It is a common misbelieve that all dirt and dust is contained within the machine when vacuuming the house. This thought is not true with many vacuums on the market that use a standard filter. With a standard filter the air leaving the vacuum is not being pushed through a HEPA filter and therefore not being experiencing the filtering qualities of a HEPA filter. A standard filter does not use a highly compacted filter medium like a HEPA filter and therefore does not experience the same filtering capabilities of a HEPA vacuum cleaner.

Ok so it not as good as a HEPA filter. Why do I need better filtration anyway? Many people who use a vacuum cleaner have either asthma or allergies. Many vacuum cleaners do not contain the dust and dirt at a HEPA filtration level and will NOT help suppress allergy and asthma symptoms.

But many cheap vacuum cleaners on the market today do use a HEPA filter, so why not purchase one of those? A manufacturer can put a HEPA filter on any machine but in many cases the machine is not constructed well enough in order to filter at true HEPA filtration levels. A vacuum may have a HEPA filter but not HEPA filtration because the air leaks out of cracks and around the HEPA filter. However there are manufacturers such as Miele that are capable of achieving true HEPA filtration.

What exactly makes a Miele vacuum stand out from other vacuums? Miele vacuum cleaners are unique because they have a sealed system that makes sure all of the expelled air is pushed through a HEPA filter before leaving the machine. The vacuum is completely sealed so the only air leaving you vacuum is HEPA certified and virtually free of allergens and asthmatic triggers.

How does Miele achieve a Sealed System? Miele has rubber sealing all around the inside of the vacuum cleaner allowing no dirty air to escape. A Miele vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter also has rubber sealing around the HEPA filter ensuring all of the air about to be expelled is HEPA certified clean.

Does a Miele Vacuum perform any other incredible feats? Absolutely! The Miele HEPA filter contains charcoal on the bottom of the filter to help rid the air offensive odors. Most vacuum do not even have the filtration capabilities to properly clean the air, yet amazingly Miele vacuum cleaners are capable of efficiently cleaning and deodorizing the air.

Many vacuum cleaners do not have the filtration of the Miele Vacuum Cleaner. With Superb Filtration and Odor Elimination, the Miele Vacuum Cleaner is one of the cleanest machines on the market today. Hopefully this article will help you with your future vacuum purchase.

What are the Typical Prices for Residential Air Duct Cleaning

by Amy Nutt

Your heat had been running constantly, all the way through a rough, long winter. Now your central air conditioning has been running non-stop through the dog days of summer. You can’t remember when the last time you had your air ducts cleaned was, but you know it’s been quite a while. You know that it needs to be done, but you don’t know how to find the right person to do it and you really haven’t the foggiest idea of how much it should cost you.

The cost of a residential air duct cleaning can depend on several things, but some of the major factors include: the size of the home to be serviced, the number of units that need to be cleaned, how regularly the units are used and how much dirt is built up in the ducts.

One thing is for sure though, you don’t want a fly-by-night contractor performing your work, and you want it done by qualified professionals.

A good, complete cleaning, done by a reputable company should probably cost you somewhere between four hundred dollars (about four hundred and ten Canadian) on the low end and fourteen hundred dollars (about fourteen hundred and thirty-five Canadian) on the high end, mostly depending on the factors mentioned above.

Here are some things that need to be considered when getting an estimate:

If a company’s price quote seems too low, then there is probably a good reason that it seems too low. Maybe the company isn’t licensed, maybe they aren’t insured, or maybe they aren’t using all of the proper and necessary air duct cleaning equipment to do the job the right way.

Make sure that when you are getting estimates that your air duct cleaning will be done by licensed, bonded and insured professionals who are going to be doing all of the work that is customary with a complete air duct cleaning. Make sure that the estimate includes the cleaning of all registers, cleaning of the coils and the fan and the inside of the duct work in its entirety.

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association and the Environmental Protection Agency warn that consumers should be cautious towards cleaning services who guarantee the positive health benefits of a duct cleaning, because as of yet there is no real proof that a person will become healthier simply by having their air ducts cleaned. The NADCA also warns against cleaning services that offer very low initial costs and promises that your entire job will be completed in less than an hour.

To get a complete and effective cleaning, all of the parts of your air duct system must be tended to with the appropriate equipment - this probably won’t be the most expensive maintenance procedure that you’ll ever have performed on your home, but if an estimate is drastically lower than the low end number mentioned above, there could very well be some kind of catch that could end up costing you a lot more money in the long run.

Saving money is always appealing, getting a great deal on a product or a service is a great feeling, but in the case of someone performing an air duct cleaning on your home, the risk of getting shoddy work for a low price simply isn’t worth it. The heating and air conditioning system of your home is very important, when you have work that needs to be done on your air duct equipment it should only be performed by qualified, licensed and insured professionals to ensure that the work is done properly the first time. Your duct work is in use almost all year long, even if the lowest estimate that you receive is near the high end of the spectrum, it will be well worth it if you are sure that the work is being done by people who know what they are doing and that your system will run problem free until it’s time for another cleaning.

Health World Alternative Medicine Homeopathy and Asthma

by Lindelwa Maseko

Asthma patients, who suffer with a lung and airways disorder which makes them both more sensitive, often find that their condition means that they also have a greater sensitivity to other substances that they may be allergic too. Certain substances trigger an attack which has the affect of causing their airways to contract making breathing difficult.

The most successful asthma treatment to date is that of avoiding attacks in the first place which is why it is imperative an asthma patient learns to recognize when an asthma attack is going to take place. These symptoms can all be present or only a few but they include problems breathing, a feeling as if someone has a tight band around your chest, constant coughing and of course wheezing.

Even though it isn’t present in every asthma case, the most noticed is the wheezing which seems to produce a whistle like sound when the sufferer breathes out. Most people with a lung condition will wheeze at some point but it is the asthma condition that produces the most incidents of wheezing.

The coughing which just happens to be more pronounced in the morning and evening is part of the condition that is caused by a cold but there are other symptoms that are easily identified. It is because of this that many asthma diagnoses are delayed as it is quite normal for it to be considered a cold or flu virus. An easy way to see the difference though is the person with have a noticeable bluish tinge to their skin which is an unmistakable indication that they are not receiving enough oxygen and require medication.

Even though this is an important symptom, it is far more crucial to get air into the asthma sufferers lungs which means the irritant causing the problem will need to be removed from the area. Rapid breathing is also something to be watched for as it can vary in severity despite regular medication being taken.

The problem with severe attacks is that there is difficulty getting sufficient oxygen to the vital organs which can of course lead to death and emergency treatment may required at this point. People can die from severe asthma attacks and there are currently approximately 20.5 million Americans currently suffering with this condition as it is not uncommon for there to be a family history surrounding this or other allergies.

This is why the asthma sufferer must make every attempt to find which irritants are the triggers for their asthma and by avoiding these they will hopefully have fewer attacks. Avoiding the asthma triggers is necessary but it is possible that there are other irritants which could cause problems so an asthma sufferer must remain vigilant.

Asthma Treatment From China

by Ellen Mathers

When seasons change my wife is sure to get very sick. What I call prescription drug sick. She says she feels like a one man (woman) manufacturing plant for post nasal drip. She complains that her eyes are red and burn. She looks like a reject from “Night of the Living Dead” and feels like it too. I should know because I too had asthma and allergies but grew out of them before college. Fortunately for her, Great husband that I am, have found her the ultimate solution.

I grew up in rural America on a farm. My allergies were horrible. They just seemed to diminish as I grew older. I was impressed that I did not have to deal with sneezing and coughing I couldn’t see straight. I felt as if I was free at last. My wife isn’t as fortunate as me.

What would you do to obtain a “cure”? What would you do to get rid of this constant seasonal irritant? My wife still has to medicate each new season with a plethora of over the counter drugs. She will seek allergy relief anywhere. This can’t be a good thing. She would do almost anything to get do away with the constant headache, no pun intended, of allergies. She has tried many off the wall cures and some of them work so-so.

I was pretty excited after speaking with a stranger I had met while using my wife’s gift. I had just happened to be getting a massage, which was a gift from my wife for our anniversary, and the massage therapist let me in on her little secret. She has acupuncture done and told me all about how it provided immediately relief for her asthma and allergies.

My massage therapist can bear witness that acupuncture is the best thing since sliced bread. Her allergies are gone. Just gone! No sneezing! No runny nose! No headache! My wife tried it and voila hers were cured too. It was just great. Asian medicine, centuries old, does have something to offer after all. Who would have thought!

The lady and my therapist too told me that life was given back to them after allergy treatment. They can now visit outdoor parks and track meets.

Needles can be scary and so can acupuncture for the first time for the uninitiated. The way it works is by sticking needles in key spots on your person to relieve the pain and affliction of allergies. It is said to come from 300 BC in China. There are twelve key areas throughout the body and then at least 8 sub areas.

So, maybe you’ve tried 20 different “allergy cures,” and they all failed you so far. Okay, now what? Just maybe acupuncture is the answer to your allergy relief. This especially goes for the folks, who are allergic to a number of different things. Get tested for your allergies if you don’t already know where they stem from. This can assist you with proper allergy cures.

Asthma Indicators and Remedies

by James M. Crosswell

It is very common for a person to suffer from hereditary conditions related to asthma primarily due to the air that is in their immediate environment. Normally these conditions affect the way someones immune systems handle foreign pollutants. There are many natural remedies available that can potentially eliminate all symptoms of asthma that are formulated by homeopathic and naturopathic and means and using them is not difficult to do

In addition another common perception in the minds of most people when it concerns an asthmatic person, is to picture someone who is always having trouble breathing normally and who also ends up needing an inhaler to restore normal breathing once more.

Even so, a number of triggers have also been identified that can cause an asthma attack. So using a natural asthma remedy has often proved to be very effective, especially as it can address the root cause of the attack and not give any reason to worry about developing side effects as would be the case when using prescription drugs.

A natural asthma remedy can prove to be as effective, (if not more effective) than medications and it is also safe to use along with other ongoing and traditional treatments. However, it is still necessary to act with caution when using natural asthma remedy options with medications since there is always a risk that a negative reaction may occur.

The nature of an asthma attack can be acerbated by anxiety that naturally comes from the tightening of the chest, shortness of breath and persistent cough that occur. Vitamins B6 and B12 and Kava Kava have been found by some people to alleviate the symptoms of an asthma attack. Be advised using Kava Kava at the same time as you are using sedatives or alcohol could can cause bad side effects as Kava Kava is also a sedative.

Easily located at your local drug store, St. John’s Wort has been found to relive asthma conditions. Also vitamin E and grape seed extract are good examples of immune system booster that seem to help.

You might consider something that others have found to be effective. Magnetic healing bracelets have been found by many to offer a non-invasive and highly effective treatment for asthma conditions.

EXPOSURE TO ASBESTOS

by Joseph Amainte

Asbestos is composed of fibers that can cause life threatening illness, such as mesothelioma (a cancer), among others. Many companies are being proactive and having asbestos removed before it can harm someone. It can live safely behind walls or ceilings, but as soon as any fibers escape, people may inhale them and become ill. It only takes a tiny amount ingested into the lungs. Unfortunately, the symptoms may not be visible for as long as 40 years, so it’s difficult to prevent getting sick from an unknown source.

Typically, a person becomes exposed to asbestos from work or even home but a third risk is for people that live near places such as shipyards, steel mills, power plants, refineries, and so on where asbestos is used. What happens is that the fibers become disrupted, contaminating nearby residential areas. In addition to the industries mentioned, other common areas include maritime, construction, automotive repair (specifically brakes and clutches), roofing, and railroads.

Just as asbestos can be a serious problem for some types of businesses, it can also exist in many homes and schools. Prior to the 1970s, some materials used for building structures contained asbestos. In fact, an estimated 30 million tons of asbestos fiber was used just in the U.S. during this time, with some winding up in homes and schools.

Now that you’ve seen this alarming news, how can you ensure that you’re safe? For one thing, not all houses built before 1970 used any asbestos. Secondly, the chief places where people are exposed to asbestos are industrial sites. Not only that, but more people that were exposed did not get sick as opposed to those who did.

However, if you have concerns or suspect that your home may have asbestos, you can contact the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to locate licensed or certified techniques where you live who can check the home for problems and if found, remove it. In addition, the EPA will usually recommend that you contact a separate firm to have them conduct an assessment to ensure there are no conflicts with the finding.

Then, if you are thinking about building a home, unless the material is clearly labeled, you should assume it could have some level of asbestos in it. Therefore, until you can verify that the product is safe, you should contact the manufacturer to find out exactly what is contained in each type of material.

When you purchase a home from a private seller, the seller is required by law to disclose any known hazards to you, including asbestos. Apartment buildings built prior to 1970 may have materials that include asbestos in their construction. Remember that asbestos only becomes truly dangerous when the product breaks down or opens, until then it is not a health risk.

In 1995 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set guidelines for asbestos discovery and follow-up in work environments. Any time it’s found, employees must be notified. The same applies to rental units. If your potential landlord informs you of existing asbestos, it will be your choice to live there or not.

Can Saunas Improve Your Breathing or Sinus Conditions?

by Amy Nutt

Saunas can help those with breathing or sinus conditions breathe better. This may seem like a contradiction, especially since the steam associated with a traditional sauna can aggravate certain breathing conditions, especially asthma. However, studies have shown that those with breathing conditions can actually find relief from a trip to the spa.

There are three main types of saunas used today. Dry saunas use a wood stove to heat the air inside of the sauna. This creates little to no steam, which means those who cannot breathe in steamy air can breathe in a dry sauna. Because the heat in a dry sauna is not moist, it does not make the user feel as though he or she is breathing “heavy” air. This can make it possible for asthmatics to use the sauna when they otherwise were unable to do so. The heat does not feel as hot as it really is, simply because it does not contain high humidity.

Some people with breathing difficulties find it difficult to breathe inside a traditional dry sauna. The dry, hot air stifles their breathing. However, infrared saunas, the second type of sauna, operate differently. Instead of heating the air, the infrared sauna heats the person. This means that the air inside of the sauna is the same as the air outside of the sauna. Those with chronic breathing difficulties can benefit from the healing properties of using a sauna while avoiding the problem air in a traditional dry sauna by using an infrared sauna.

People with breathing problems that can breath steamy air often report more relief from a steam sauna than a dry or infrared sauna. Doctors often recommend taking children who have sinus infections or asthma into a steamy bathroom to help them breathe. The steam in the bathroom has the same effect on the child that the steam in a sauna has on an adult with breathing difficulties. It helps to break up the mucus that is causing the problems. Therefore, those who can breathe in a steam sauna often report more relief of their breathing difficulties from this type of sauna treatment than from the dry or infrared treatments. The problem, however, is that the steam can aggravate some people’s breathing difficulties, so caution should be used when these individuals are using the sauna for the first time.

All three types of saunas help rejuvenate the body overall. This serves to help breathing problems as well as other skin conditions. When someone enters a sauna, the heat penetrates the body and opens the pores. As the body heats, it begins to perspire. Along with the perspiration, toxins that have built up in the body are removed. This increases circulations and improves the immune system. As a result, the body functions better as a whole unit. Sinus problems and other breathing difficulties are lessened as a result of the decrease of toxins in the body.

Some breathing problems are aggravated by too much stress. A sauna, whether wet or dry, can help relieve stress and fatigue. This can help alleviate stress-related breathing problems for certain people.

Personal saunas to be used at home are available, but this purchase should not be made until the person suffering from breathing difficulties has first determined whether or not a sauna will help. Individuals who are wondering whether or not a sauna will help their breathing and sinus problems should try one, unless advised not to by their doctors. Most day spas have saunas available. By visiting a spa, those with breathing problems can try the sauna and see if they have any improvement in their symptoms before investing the money in a personal sauna. If someone finds relief from their asthma or other chronic breathing problems in a sauna, then buying a personal sauna may be a good investment.

What my bagless vacuum is leaving my house dirty and unhealthy?

by Kristina Brown

Have you ever encountered this situation? You are in the middle of vacuuming the floor pressured for time because company is coming over soon when you encounter the problem of a full bag and additionally a filter that needs changing. Searching frantically through your closet to find the necessary materials to rectify the problem you see that you are depleted of both filters and bags. You suddenly wish you had a bag-less vacuum cleaner, with a filter system that does not require consistent changing. Although a bagless vacuum cleaner would solve this problem from occurring, it is deficient in other areas where a bagged system excels. For this reason it is important to consider both the positives and negatives of each item and how it specifically relates to your situation.

Numerous people question the benefits and advantages to owning a bagless vacuum cleaner. One of the biggest benefits of owning a bagless machine is the situation mentioned above will never occur for you, simply because it is impossible to run out of bags for something that does not require bags. With a bagless machine you will never have to worry about having bags for your machine.

Lifetime filters is an additional benefit of bagless machines is found in the vacuum brands such as the Dyson. This popular bagless vacuum cleaner has the unique advantage of not needing a filter change. Dyson filters are washable as opposed to being disposable, a feature that saves time, money, and frustration. Dyson filters work by simply cleaning them every 6 months, and leaving them out to dry for 12 hours, directly after doing so you are able to start vacuuming. It is very important to remember that not all bagless machines include this feature, and other bagless vacuums may have you changing filters more often to compensate for not having bags in the machine.

An additional benefiting feature of bagless vacuum cleaners not found in all bagless vacuum cleaners is cyclonic technology. Cyclonic technology allows a bagless vacuum cleaner not to lose suction despite the fullness of the dirt bin. If a vacuum is not using cyclonic technology a bagless vacuum cleaner will quickly block with dirt and lose suction, causing you a great deal of unnecessary anguish.

Now it is time to talk about the disadvantages of having a bagless vacuum cleaner. The biggest disadvantage is that when you dump the bin, the dirt goes flying back up into the air and onto your floor. Many bagless vacuum cleaner manufacturers tell you that you must empty your bin outside in order to fix this dilemma. When the dust puffs back up into the air it agitates many people with allergies and asthma. For people with such a condition, you may want to consider a bagged machine because they contain the dirt and dust much better than a bagless machine.

Another downside to owning a bagless vacuum cleaner is it will always appear soiled. The dirt in the bin will be visible for everyone to see till you empty it and wash it. As mentioned before empting the dust and dirt component is an annoying and stressful task, but even more disturbing is the dirt bin will have to be washed - by hand in order to remove all of the dust and dirt from the bin. After picking up so many gross thing off the floor with your vacuum cleaner washing the machine by hand is tedious and disgusting task.

A serious weakness to the bagless vacuum cleaner is the filtration system. Due to the poor construction of many bagless machines filters quickly get filled with dirt and prevent proper cleaning job, leaving you with dirty and disgusting air. Not only does the filtration system not work correctly in many bagless vacuum systems but you are required to change the filter every 6 months, leaving you with a bill of about $80 dollars a year; a steep price for a vacuum you thought had no additional equipment to purchase. For this reason when buying a vacuum cleaner try purchasing a vacuum cleaner with a lifetime filter such as the Dyson or a bagged vacuum where the filtration system works properly and constantly.

Bagless vacuum cleaners help prevent extra spending on bags and save time taking trips to a store for bags. However bagless vacuum cleaners are not the best for people with allergies or asthma because dirt and dust can easily be re-emitted back into your household. Bagless vacuum cleaner bins always look dirty and can only look clean if washed after every vacuuming. Some bagless vacuum cleaners also require filter changes every 6-months for a filter that does not even perform properly. Bagless vacuum cleaners have advantages and disadvantages, but when purchasing you must decide whether a bagless unit is the best for your situation.
