New Motorcycle Helmets Save Lives

by Frank Medley

For a rider who has owned their bike for a long time, it’s likely that they’ve owned their helmet just as long. If this is you, it might be time to start thinking about getting a new motorcycle helmet, for several reasons.

There are many reasons why you would need a new motorcycle helmet immediately. If you are very safety conscious, you should get a new helmet if yours suffers a hard fall, say from a high shelf. This can weaken it.

After you’re involved in an accident that includes impact, you should also immediately replace your helmet with a new one. Any impact can damage the helmet and leave it unable to protect you.

There are also time limits on how long you should keep even the best cared for helmet. Your manufacturer will usually recommend a new helmet every five years, because some of the helmet’s materials will break down over time.

Other parts of your helmet will also become weakened with age and wear. Some of the glues and resins which hold your helmet together break down and affect the inner liner. Contact with the oils from your hair does the same over time.

If your helmet looks as if it’s been dropped or damaged, even if you haven’t done so, go get a new helmet. Someone else may have dropped it, and not realized that this can lead it to become unsafe.

Don’t forget that a helmet has been specifically designed to withstand only one impact. After one impact, it won’t be able to protect you. That is why you will need a new motorcycle helmet.

If you have realized that it is time to get a new motorcycle helmet, don’t despair. This is an opportunity for you to get a new helmet that is very safe, and that also looks very cool, a definite plus.
