A visit to Melbourne is sure to entertain, amuse and give a great experience, because there’s so much to see and do in Victoria’s capital. Melbourne is very easy to explore, because it is laid out in a grid pattern that is compact, plus the city is basically flat. Not too many hard hills to tackle!

New visitors to Melbourne often begin their travels by hopping on the City Circle Tram. It travels around the outside of the main business and shopping area, giving you a good introduction to the places you might wish to visit later. Try walking initially, and if you follow the Golden Mile Trail, you’ll get to see many of Melbourne’s most well known historic sites.

Bus tours are a great way to see more of Melbourne, once you’ve got the inner city walk over and done with. The Marvellous Melbourne Tour is a half-day bus tour that goes through the inner suburbs, including the famous Queen Victoria Markets, Fitzroy Gardens and Albert Park, the Australian F1 Grand Prix home. If you’re a sports lover, then Melbourne’s claim to being the sporting capital of Australia can be investigated on the Melbourne Sports Tour, which takes you behind the scenes of Melbourne’s world class sporting venues and gives you a look at the popular sports played in this city.

If your tastes are a little more upmarket, you could consider trying a hot air balloon ride or a river cruise to see the city in all its glory. For something more adventurous, why not take a flying tour in a seaplane. Both Dog Scenic Flights and Melbourne Seaplanes can give you a thrilling experience if this appeals to you.

If you’re looking for a tour with a difference, Melbourne still has plenty to offer, including the Haunted Melbourne Ghost Tour – a walking tour that goes to several areas known for paranormal activity. Then, you can get a look at what the city was like in the past eras by going on either the Town Hall Tour or the Cemetery Tour. These are a lot of fun and you’ll hear all sorts of interesting stories about some of this city’s more popular historical personalities.

For the sweet tooths amongst you, you absolutely MUST try one of the famous chocolate tours of Melbourne, such as the Chocolate Indulgence Walk, which includes tastings from Melbourne’s best chocolate shops. This is also a great way to discover the great laneways and arcades of the city. For the foodies amongst you, consider combining 2 of Melbourne’s great loves – food and trams – into one tour, and try the Colonial Tramcar Restaurants tour.

If you’re a shopaholic, you’ll LOVE Melbourne’s Shopping Spree bus tour. It takes you down all the backstreets and hidden alleys, to visit the bargain factory and warehouse outlets that Melbourne is famous for.

The Aboriginal Heritage Walk offers visitors excellent insight into the history and culture of the indigenous tribes that once populated Melbourne. They also provide a chance to marvel at the magnificent Royal Botanic Gardens.

While there is plenty to see in the city of Melbourne itself, if you’re a bit of an explorer, you might also like to consider a day trip out of the city and see some of Victoria’s best tourist spots. Places such as the Great Ocean Road, Philip Island, the Grampians National Park and the famous old gold mining towns of Ballarat and Bendigo will delight you. Also, wine lovers should definitely make plans to visit the Yarra Valley Wine region and enjoy the local drop.
